He wandered the halls of the Enterprise while she was in space dock being repaired from the damage she had suffered in the battle against Nero.  It was all done, on paper and in record except for the ceremony.  He would graduate the Academy, advanced right to the rank of Captain, his supposed cheating on the Kobayashi Maru swept neatly under the rug and he would be taking the place of the newly promoted and still recovering, Admiral Pike.

He could scarcely take it all in, but the pride in his accomplishments were severely tempered by the loss of Vulcan, the loss of the majority of the Vulcan people as well as the great loss of star ships and Fleet personnel.  As he inspected the work repair crews were completing in Engineering, smiling as he heard Scotty berating some hapless worker.  He couldn't help but think of the elder Spock as he thought of Scotty.  He hadn't seen the elder Vulcan since those desperate moments on Delta Vega.  He assumed he was keeping away from the young Spock, but there were so few Vulcans now and he knew both of them were on Earth, both near Fleet Headquarters and the Vulcan Embassy there.

He had put in requests to fill out his crew.  Uhura would stay on communications, Bones would stay as the CMO, both Sulu and Chekov were at the helm.  He needed a science officer and he needed a first officer.  As he took a turbo lift from Engineering to the Bridge, he thought over the list that had been provided him.  The names on the list showed him that no expense was being spared in outfitting this crew.  He was given the best of the best to chose from, but it troubled him that Spock's name was not on the list.  Considering Spock's talents and what the elder Spock had told him, about the possibility of what Spock and Kirk could become, what they could accomplish together, there was no one else he wanted for either position.

He got up, having taken a seat in the captain's chair, nodded to a workman who was headed for one of the helm's panels.  He made his way quickly to the shuttle craft bay and then on a shuttle returning to San Francisco.  He decided he would find the locations of Lt. Uhura and the elder Spock.  Uhura, he figured, after remembering that kiss she had given Spock, would have an idea where Spock was.  He was prepared to his best argument to keep Spock in Starfleet.  He wanted to know where the elder Spock was too.  Maybe he could get some more from the still cryptic but more open version of Spock.  The more information about the younger Spock before he could get before talking to him, the better.
